I don’t know about you but I never seem to have enough time.  There are so many things to do every day, that by the end of the day, I still don’t think I’ve accomplish enough. It makes me think about Time Management courses and I recall that for years they were always the number one attended and requested training course.  I haven’t checked lately but I’ll bet that they’re still on top.

Many years back I had a boss who would complain about people starting from the proverbial blank piece of paper.  He would say, “We’ve done so many projects for customers, isn’t there something that we can reuse?  Why do we always have to start over from scratch?” Years later in my own company, I found myself thinking the same thing.  We seemed to always be creating proposals from scratch, building courses from scratch, and the list went on.  I also noticed something else about all the “from scratch” items we created.  They lacked consistency in quality, ease of use or understanding, and they did not necessarily distinguish or brand our work to make it distinct.

This effort was not without difficultly because some staff believed that templates suppressed their creativity.  It took much convincing by me, as well as numerous client accolades on their finished work, before they were won over to the concept that being creative did not mean they had to start from scratch.  A painter’s template is the medium they work in such as watercolor, oil, or pen and ink.  A musician’s template is their instrument of choice, and a dancer’s template is the type of dance from which they choose to express their creativity.
